Wolfery is not large. It’s still a small platform.
Yet every day or two, I notice a character (not always the same character, there’s been several now) that’s advertising or otherwise asking to move to a different platform, in their LFRP/Description/About.
I don’t want another F-Chat. Yet this is the exact behavior we see across that whole platform.
I’m not talking about sending a friend your handle after knowing and writing for many days, or weeks. I’m talking about a flat out ‘Hey, so this character is here to catch your attention, come talk to me on x* if you want to roleplay.’ I would fully support making that sort of act a ban-worthy maneuver. We should all be trying to get our friends over to this beautiful corner of the furry net, not use it to bait them off elsewhere.
(* Thanks, Elon, for making the ‘x’ a specific social media site, instead of a generic ‘insert value here’ object.)
Ehhh. I saw that too, but to me it’s just a useful tool to know not to bother interacting with them. Wolfery is a compelling enough platform that I doubt many will be tempted through such ads.
I know the most blatant case, and they seem fairly clear about what they want, but for some others it can be misleading. For example @Vernon_Otter has something similar if you just look at the text immediately visible in About, but dig closer and there are references to rooms and I’ve seen him around the park and elsewhere (perhaps the addition of an “also” might help there).
I do notice a lot of people mentioning an F-chat profile- though for most of them, that seems to be a ‘hey, here’s a character and/or ERP summary’. Some people may not want to write thing more than once, and a F-list profile is not a bad choice for that. Or a refsheet.net profile allowing multiple images.
As for other platforms. I think there’s times it’s not bad to mention your Telegram or Discord if you want an alternate method of contact. I don’t think we need to, or want to ban allowing others to link elsehwere in their profile. Wolfery is a strong enough community that we can survive and thrive even with others linking to elsewhere.
That said, I agree that it’s a mild social faux pas to be on Wolfery only to advertise your availability elsewhere.
Hey, Green, thanks for pointing out it may be a problem. I’ve made the change you suggested as indeed, I do not intend to drive others to other platforms. That has been in my about for years now, for those who see me and:
wonder if I’m that Vernon ott
wish to contact me in other ways because I am unavailable in Wolfery, they choose to leave the site, or any number of reasons
I agree about mentioning an F-list profile, hell, a few of my characters do too. It’s a far handier way to list kinks, goals, scene ideas, and/or backstory than the relatively limited system in place right now on Wolfery (albeit, one I don’t necessarily believe needs changed). Same with mentioning your accounts on other platforms, nothing wrong with multiple points of contact. It’s never a bad idea to spread your eggs around multiple baskets.
This is purely a complaint against those who use Wolfery to advertise ‘Hey, you! Come do me, but only on (other platform), kthanks!’
That IS odd. I can totally see linking an F-List for their very very detailed tagging system, though pulling people in that direction for interaction is, uh… Odd? You’re already here after all. Similar to how people use public scening areas to drag people into a private thing elsewhere.
…nothing wrong with it of course, just against the spirit of things.
To be fair, if I’m starting something in public and I’m even slightly guessing it’s going in a direction that would violate area but not site rules, I’m going to take it to “a private thing elsewhere.” Also, I know a lot of shy folks.
To be honest, I’m only here because of @Windchaser posting an advertisement on the board on Tapestries Muck. I believe she was stockaded for that action. And to go and see Wolfery start punishing users for such thing do leave a little bit of a bitter taste.
It is odd and faux pas yeah? I… don’t really see it as a threat.
I fail to see where we have said we’re going to start punishing users for having links to other sites. Opinions held by users do not policy make. There’s not been a rule change regarding this, and moderators have not, and will not, be taking action against people suggesting play elsewhere.
Like Talon said, it’s kinda weird, but it’s not against our rules.
Just because it’s worth repeating, Maximus is right. I am not saying we would punish such an action or we are considering a change to the rules to this effect. I just think it’s odd - from an RP perspective - to cause a frame of reference shift like that. 'cause it is. But if that’s your thing? Go on.
I didn’t like Taps very hidden ‘advertising policy’ they used against people, and our own much more reasonable one is just that. …and furthemore I’d be disinclined to see an RP request as ‘advertising’ anyway.
No, I was stocked for something totally unrelated. However, once Wolfery added the Supporter system i stopped mentioning it at all there, because ‘no making money using the muck’.
Even though, you know, I don’t make any money from it.
Personally I never understood the territorialism between different platforms. Talking to someone elsewhere won’t keep me from coming here if I want to be here. If someone else feels more comfortable talking on F-List or Taps or whatever, so be it. Means nothing to me.
